Castle with imposing shield wall

The castle with the imposing shield wall was built in 1386 above Gerhartstein (today Geroldstein) by Philipp von Gerhartstein on the Mainz territory of the Rheingau. The Archbishopric of Mainz sponsored the construction in order to secure the area against the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, whose territory extended to the village and castle of Geroldstein.
