Rock nest, robber knight castle

Around the year 1150 the castles Stein, Kallenfels and Stock im Hahne were built above the present village. The castle or Schloss Stein was built on the upper rocky hilltop. Kallenfels Castle (Kaldenfels) was 80 feet below Stein Castle. Further below, Stock im Hahne, a dwelling house more of a tower-like building intended for defense of the road below than for knight's dwelling, was built.

The first inhabitants were the von Stein family, in Latin documents usually called de Lapide, more rarely de Petra.

The ruins of Steinkallenfels Castle were first mentioned in documents in 1212 and were originally the imperial fiefdom of the Lords of Stein, later called Lords of Steinkallenfels (extinct in 1778). As early as 1150 and 1158 a Hugo von Stein is mentioned, perhaps named after the castle. Since the 14th century it was a Ganerbenburg. In a castle peace treaty of 1371 25 co-owners are mentioned who had shares in the castle, but probably not all of them lived there. In 1615 the castle was already described as dilapidated. Finally, it was blown up by the French in 1682/84 and has been a ruin ever since.
