The castle, probably founded in the 13th century, was a castle of the Hohenlohe family.
Around 1511, Johann von Seinsheim-Schwarzenberg had the castle rebuilt and partially fortified using modern fortification techniques; the remaining casemates date from this period. In the Peasants' War of 1525, Hohenlandsberg was taken by the freedom fighters, but remained unharmed.[1] In 1554 the castle was destroyed in the Second Margrave War and fell into disrepair.
